Built in 1784 or 1785 by a pioneer settler, the
Shook House is believed to be the oldest frame house in Haywood County.
It stands at the western edge of Clyde just off U.S. 19-23. A marker
along the highway gives interested passersby a historical description of the
house. Although the house was built by Jacob Shook, it has been owned
by members of the Smathers family for many generations. The present
owner and occupant is Mrs. Mary Morgan, who was a Smathers before her
marriage. |
