SHOOK HOUSE MUSEUM
At The
SHOOK-SMATHERS HOUSE
“The Historic Pride of Clyde”
Welcome to new members of our mailing list! As you know from our last
Newsletter, these brief updates will be in e-mail form from now on,
instead if by US mail. Thank you for helping us save on paper and
postage! If you know of others not now on our list, please advise them
to call our 800 number and give us an e-mail contact address -
1-877-620-2300.
By now most of you know we are planning to open the Shook Museum on the
23rd of this month. Because the entire House is not yet ready for
viewing {especially the exhibits}, this will be a “Work-in-Progress”,
Preview of a portion of the first floor. We are hoping for a large
number of visitors so please join us. Prior to the Preview tour, we will
have a brief Dedication Ceremony, introduce platform guests, followed by
a quick peek inside part of the House. This will give you a feel for the
many fascinating archival, structural and architectural things
{including the famous Chapel} you will see later on the full-house,
guided tour.
Again, our heart-felt THANKS to those who have volunteered their
valuable time and talents to make the Museum a reality. Frank D. Hall,
Vice President, for much behind-the-scene assistance; Frances Hart,
Secretary and Managing-Director, who really is our Major Domo on site,
Prof. George Thomas of Haywood Community College who has undertaken the
herculean, on-going task of making the property into a place of beauty
through landscape know-how; Patrick Willis, Curator, who is working with
the many interesting displays, preparing them for viewing. Prof. Thomas
has had a particularly difficult task of late — the weather has not been
at all cooperative regarding the many outdoor tasks he and his students
are undertaking. Our eternal gratitude to these and many others for
their help. You can also express your thanks to these good people by a
note, a spoken “thanks”, and especially by your generous donation for
the maintenance of the Museum.
By now, we hope you are aware of our web site,
www.shookmuseum.org. Currently
you will see the latest picture of the House followed by the last
Newsletter. Soon, a recent newspaper article will be posted. Friend
Wilma Simpson promises cooperation by her Shook History site with our
Museum site. If you have items if interest to the Museum, please let us
know and we will post.
We regret ending on a very sad note. Bishop Earl G. Hunt, one of our
Honorary Chairpersons, recently passed away in Asheville. This is a
great loss not only to our Foundation, but to the Chairman and other
members of the his family. Dr. Hunt was minister of the church they
attended many years ago. A great friend and a towering leader of
Christendom has left us. He will be sorely missed. It is our hope that
Mrs. Mary Ann Hunt, our other Honorary Chairperson will be able to
attend on the 23rd.
> Earlier we told you of our need for a small Visitor’s Center so we can
accommodate school groups and other large groups. We thank those of you
who have made a donation to this fund. However, we are not close to our
goal. Now is the time to “give til it hurts”!! So many of you have
expressed great interest in this historic House
— PLEASE translate your
interest into financial help. Send a TAX DEDUCTIBLE donation to Shook
Museum Foundation. Box 355, Clyde, N. C. 28721
THANK YOU ! ! !
