SHOOK HOUSE MUSEUM
At The
SHOOK-SMATHERS HOUSE
“The Historic Pride of Clyde”
We are pleased to bring you one of our occasional Newsletters to inform
you of the latest development in the rescue and restoration of the Shook
House. We are pleased with your continuing interest. Late developments:
>Frances C. Hart continues her invaluable assistance as our volunteer
Managing-Director.
>Patrick Willis of the Biltmore Staff, continues as our volunteer
Curator.
>Valuable artifacts and memorabilia donated by Mrs. Ruth M. Jones have
been returned to the House for display. Mrs. Martha Reeves has donated
fascinating old legal records, now being studied by the National Trust
in Washington.
> Late last fall, our new driveway and parking lot were installed close
to Collins St.
> Work inside the House is practically finished. Finishing touches are
being completed. The House will be presented as near as we can determine
it must have looked when first built, except with all modern equipment
and fittings to meet all codes. Inside painting and finishes have been
applied. The 1890s floors have been refinished. All original hardware
has been put back in place.
> The Chapel on the third floor has been stabilized and configured as it
must have appeared prior to the 1890s addition.
> The kitchen is now being installed. It is professionally designed with
extra ice-making and dish-washing capacity, as well as other equipment
which will make possible small catered affairs in this fascinating
building — think weddings, receptions, parties, etc in a very unique
setting.
> Profs. Thomas and Sherman, of the Community College, continue their
wonderful assistance in landscaping the property. They are cutting and
trimming trees; they are grading the entire front yard in order to put
in new sod from the left of the House to the new driveway; students have
designed wonderful plans for the gardens. Lloyd Anderson, Arborist, has
donated invaluable assistance in the trimming if the trees.
> David T. Conrad, Accountant, will be auditing the financial records of
the Foundation.
>We are creating our web site,
www.shookmuseum.org. By viewing it, you will see the latest
picture of the House, as it appears on our souvenir Post Card.
> Our last Newsletter requested that you let us know if you want to
continue receiving these mailings. Some of you have responded. In order
to save on paper and postage, we are going to an e-mail format for these
occasional news bulletins. Therefore, if you want to continue on our
list {we hope you do!!}, please call --- we now have an 800 number for
the Shook Museum — 1-877-620-2300. As of now, a very pleasant voice
{guess who?} thanks you for your call and tell you of our Spring
Opening. After the message, there is a beep. At that point, leave your
message with your eddress, or your instructions to continue mailing.
> It is our high hope to be able to open the Museum to the public
sometime in April. At that time we will have a short dedication
ceremony, followed by a quick walk through the part of the House ready
for showing. EVERYONE IS INVITED, so be watching for our announcements.
Later, the House will be open for the guided tour of the entire Museum,
conducted by trained Docents who will explain the history, architecture,
construction and artifacts throughout this historic structure.
> Earlier we told you of our need for a small Visitor’s Center so we can
accommodate school groups and other large groups. We thank those of you
who have made a donation to this fund. However, we are not close to our
goal. Now is the time to “give til it hurts”!! So many of you have
expressed great interest in this historic House
— PLEASE translate your
interest into financial help. Send a TAX DEDUCTIBLE donation to Shook
Museum Foundation. Box 355, Clyde, N. C. 28721
